How to Install a Glass Room Divider | Step-by-Step Guide

How to Install a Glass Room Divider

Installing a glass room divider can transform your space, providing separation without sacrificing light and openness. At National Glass Partitions, our glass room dividers are designed to be easy to install, whether you’re creating an inline, L-shaped, or T-shaped partition. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to install your glass room divider:

1. Prepare the Space

Before starting the installation, make sure the area is prepared:

  • Measure the space carefully to ensure that the glass divider will fit. Double-check the ceiling height, width, and any obstructions such as radiators or furniture.
  • Clear the area where the divider will be installed, including removing any obstacles and ensuring a clean, flat surface for installation.

2. Gather Tools and Materials

You will need the following tools and materials to install your glass room divider:

  • Drill and drill bits suitable for the material (e.g., masonry or wood).
  • Spirit level for accurate alignment.
  • Screws and wall plugs (not supplied) that are appropriate for your wall and ceiling material.
  • Measuring tape.
  • Glass suction lifters to handle the glass panels safely.
  • Aluminum U-channels and frames for the glass, as required by the design. Explore U-channel options here.

3. Install the U-Channels and Frames

Glass room dividers are typically mounted using U-channels on the floor, walls, and ceiling. Here's how to install them:

  • Ceiling Channel: Start by cutting the U-channel to the length of the ceiling where the divider will be installed. Drill holes at intervals (typically every 300mm) and screw the U-channel into the ceiling using the appropriate wall plugs.
  • Floor Channel: Repeat the same process for the floor channel, ensuring that it is level and aligned with the ceiling channel.
  • Wall Channels: If you're installing an L-shaped or T-shaped partition, install the wall channels, ensuring they are plumb (perfectly vertical) and securely attached.

4. Insert the Glass Panels

Once the channels are securely in place, it’s time to insert the glass panels:

  • Use suction lifters to safely handle the glass panels. For safety, always have at least two people when lifting large glass panels.
  • Carefully insert the glass into the channels, starting with the bottom edge in the floor channel and tilting the panel up into the ceiling channel. Make sure the glass is fully seated within the channels on all sides.
  • If installing an inline or L-shaped divider, insert any additional panels and ensure they are properly aligned.

5. Install Dry Joints and Finish the Channels

For a secure and seamless finish, use dry joints or adhesive strips to join the glass panels together:

  • Dry Joins: Peel off the protective backing and apply the dry join strips to the edges of the glass panels to create a strong bond and a clean finish.
  • Finish the Channels: Snap the front pieces of the two-part channels into place, covering the fixing points and providing a sleek finish.

6. Install the Door (If Applicable)

If your glass room divider includes a door, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the door and frame:

  • For frameless glass doors, attach the door hinges to the glass panels and carefully hang the door, ensuring there is an even gap around the door for smooth operation.
  • If you are using a door frame, install the frame first, ensuring it is level and plumb. Then, attach the door and secure it according to the instructions.

7. Final Adjustments and Clean-Up

Once the glass room divider is installed:

  • Check that all the glass panels and doors are aligned and level.
  • Ensure that the channels are securely fastened and that the dry joins are properly applied.
  • Clean the glass panels using a suitable glass cleaner and soft cloth, and wipe down the aluminum channels to remove any dust or debris.
