How Is a Glass Partition Wall Installed?

Installing a glass partition wall is a straightforward process for experienced installers, carpenters, builders, or competent DIYers. By using high-quality materials like toughened glass and aluminium channels, the process can be completed efficiently, ensuring a professional finish. At National Glass Partitions, we supply everything you need for seamless glass partition installation.

1. Tools and Materials Required

Before starting the installation, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Toughened glass panels (e.g., 10mm or 12mm toughened glass)
  • U-channels for ceiling and floor
  • 2-part channels for wall mounting
  • Drill and screws for mounting
  • Glass gaskets and dry joins
  • Laser level and measuring tape for accuracy
  • Spirit level (as backup)
  • Packers for leveling the glass

2. Measuring and Planning

The first and most critical step is to measure the area accurately using a laser level to ensure the space is ready for the glass partition. This step is crucial to ensure that the floor, ceiling, and walls are level, and that your glass panels will fit perfectly. Accurate measurements ensure that when ordering your partition kit, the panels will be cut to size. Plan for any necessary gaps for doors (e.g., 910mm for a standard frameless door).

We provide a variety of partition configurations such as inline, corner, and T-shaped partitions, to suit different layouts.

3. Installing the Channels

The next step is to install the channels, which will hold the glass in place. Follow these steps:

  • Ceiling Channel: Cut the U-channel to the required length, ensuring it spans the entire width of the partition. Insert the gasket into the channel before securing it. Drill holes and attach it to the ceiling using screws at least every 300mm for stability.
  • Floor Channel: Similarly, cut the U-channel for the floor and secure it into place with screws. Make sure the gasket is inserted before screwing it down to ensure a snug fit for the glass panels.
  • Wall Channels: If the partition is placed against a wall, use 2-part channels. These should be 60mm shorter than the ceiling height for 30mm channels and 50mm shorter for 25mm channels. Secure these channels to the walls in the same way as the ceiling and floor channels.

4. Installing the Glass Panels

Once the channels are installed, it's time to place the glass panels. Here's how:

  • Inserting the Glass: Insert the toughened glass panels into the U-channels, ensuring that they fit snugly with the gasket in place. Use packers to level the glass and ensure it is plumb. A laser level is recommended for checking that the glass is perfectly vertical and aligned.
  • Dry Joins: Use dry joins between the glass panels to provide a seamless finish. Peel off the backing from the dry joins and press them firmly between each panel for a secure connection.

5. Final Steps

  • Clipping the Front Cover: For 2-part channels, clip the front cover onto the wall and floor channels for a neat, finished appearance.
  • Installing the Door: If your partition includes a door, carefully position it, leaving a 5mm gap around the frameless door. Use the laser level again to ensure the door is plumb. Install the door hardware such as handles and locks as needed.

Conclusion: Simple Installation with the Right Tools

Installing a glass partition wall is simple and straightforward with the right tools and materials. Using toughened glass, U-channels, and precision tools like a laser level ensures a professional and accurate finish.
