What Are U-Channels in Glass Partition Installation? | Glass Partitioning

What Are U-Channels, and How Are They Used in Glass Partition Installation?

U-channels are an essential component in glass partition installations, providing a secure, streamlined, and modern way to fix glass panels in place. Made from durable materials such as aluminium, U-channels offer the structural support necessary to hold glass securely while maintaining a clean and minimalistic look.

1. What Are U-Channels?

U-channels, also called glass tracks or partition tracks, are aluminium profiles shaped like the letter "U." These channels are designed to hold glass panels by securing the edges of the glass within the channel, providing both support and a neat finish. U-channels are a crucial part of any glass partition system, as they hold the glass panels securely in place, creating a stable partition while still maintaining an open and airy look.

At National Glass Partitions, we offer U-channels in four different sizes and four colours to suit various installation needs:

2. Traditional Use of U-Channels in Glass Partition Installation

In traditional glass partition installations, U-channels are commonly used at the top, bottom, and sides of the glass panels to securely hold them in place. The glass is usually inserted into the U-channel, which runs the full length of the partition along the ceiling, floor, or walls. The channels are fixed into position using screws or other hardware, typically secured every 300mm for optimal stability.

In the past, installers often used a larger U-channel at the top of the partition and a smaller one at the bottom, using the lift and drop method. This required lifting the glass into the top track and then lowering it into the bottom channel.

3. Modern Use: 2-Part Channels for Easier Installation

Modern installations have evolved, with the introduction of 2-part channels making glass partitioning easier and more efficient. The 2-part channel system consists of an L-shaped part that is screwed in first, allowing for the glass to be positioned easily without needing to lift and drop the panel into the channels.

  • L-Shaped Base: The L-shaped base is installed on the floor or sides of the partition first, creating a foundation for the glass panel.
  • Clip-on Front: Once the glass is in place, the front part of the channel is clipped on, securing the glass without the need to manoeuvre it into a tight space.

This method is not only easier to install but also allows for precise adjustments to be made during the installation process, using packers to level the glass within the channel before the front is clipped on.
