Types of Commercial Glass Partitions
Commercial glass partitions are not all the same. The main choices are the partition style, the type of door, the glass specification and the layout of the room.
For most projects, those decisions matter more than choosing between lots of different “partition types”. National Glass Partitions uses a small number of practical systems that can be configured to suit different commercial layouts.
Frameless or Industrial Style?

Frameless Glass Partitions
Frameless partitions use aluminium channel around the perimeter and clear dry joins between the glass panels. There is no aluminium frame around every individual panel.
This is the simpler system and is usually the first option to consider for offices, meeting rooms, reception areas and other commercial interiors.
Framed-grid appearance
Industrial-Style Glass Partitions
Industrial-style partitions use the same underlying glass partition system, with aluminium bars applied across the glass to create the framed-grid appearance.
They are chosen mainly for appearance rather than because they are a different structural partition system.
Frameless or Framed Glass Door?
The door changes how the partition looks and how it works.
A frameless glass door uses hydraulic floor-mounted hinges and is double acting, so it can swing in either direction. It has gaps around the leaf.
A framed glass door hangs from side-mounted hydraulic hinges, opens in one direction and closes onto a rebate. This makes it the more suitable choice where a more enclosed doorway is required.
Framed doors also require the handing to be specified because the direction of opening matters.
What Glass Is Used?
The standard glass in our partition systems is 10mm toughened safety glass. For partitions above 2600mm, 12mm toughened glass is required by our system.
12.8mm acoustic laminate is also available where sound reduction is more important, but it is not supplied with frameless doors because the gaps around the door reduce the benefit.

These are single-glazed partition systems.
National Glass Partitions does not supply a standard double-glazed partition system through the online calculator.
Straight, Corner or T-Shaped Layout?
The layout is another important distinction between partition systems.
A straight run can divide an existing room from wall to wall. A corner layout creates an enclosed room from two runs of glass. A T-shaped layout adds a divider to a main run and can be used to create more than one area.
The calculator handles the joins, panel divisions and relevant deductions for each layout from the finished opening dimensions.
Full-Height Door or Transom?
A full-height door runs from floor to the top of the doorway. A transom uses a fixed glass panel above the door.
Transoms are required when the partition is too tall for the selected full-height door configuration. They can also be useful where a lower door height is preferable.
Frameless full-height doors are not available above 2600mm, while framed full-height doors are not available above 2400mm in our system.
Which Type Should You Choose?
For most commercial projects, start with the practical requirements rather than the appearance.
Decide where the room needs to go, where the door can open, whether sound control is important, and whether you want a simple frameless appearance or an industrial-style grid.
