Commercial Glass Partitions

A commercial glass partition needs to work with the way the premises is actually used. The position of doors, circulation routes, desks, counters, meeting areas and ceiling services can all affect the layout before the glass is ordered.

Plan the Partition Around the Business

On a commercial project, the best position for a partition is not necessarily the place that divides the room most evenly. It needs to leave the finished space practical for the people using it.

Before deciding the layout, check how staff and visitors will move through the premises, where the door needs to open and whether furniture, counters or storage will restrict the usable space.

Meeting and Consultation Rooms

Glass partitions can form enclosed meeting or consultation areas within a larger commercial floor plan. Door position should be chosen around the available circulation space rather than simply placed in the middle of the run.

Reception and Client Areas

A straight run or corner layout can separate customer-facing areas from working space while keeping the different parts of the premises visually connected.

More Than One Area

A T-shaped layout can create a divider off a main partition run. The divider position does not have to be central, although it must meet the face of a glass panel rather than a dry join.

Changes Later

The system is demountable. Mechanically fixed channels, gaskets and dry joins allow the partition to be removed or reconfigured if the commercial layout changes in the future.

Check the Building Before Finalising the Layout

Commercial interiors often have more to work around than an empty room. Suspended ceilings, air-conditioning units, ducting, trunking, skirting and changes in floor level can all affect where a partition or door should sit.

Measure the finished tight opening after plastering, flooring and other relevant finishes are complete. Check the width and height in several places and enter the tight dimensions without deducting a tolerance. See our glass partition fitting guide before ordering.

The glass itself arrives cut and toughened to its finished dimensions, so it cannot be trimmed or drilled to compensate for a measuring error on site.

Choose the Door for the Way the Room Will Be Used

Frameless and framed glass doors behave differently, so appearance should not be the only consideration.

A frameless door uses hydraulic floor-mounted hinges and is double acting, so it can open in either direction. A framed door is side hung, opens in one direction and closes onto a rebate.

Where conversations inside the room are more sensitive, the framed option is worth considering because a frameless door has gaps around the leaf. We do not treat a frameless door as an acoustic door.

Door swing needs checking before the glass is ordered. Look at nearby walls, desks, counters and circulation routes rather than deciding the door position from the elevation alone.

Remember Manifestation on Large Areas of Glass

Large transparent glazed areas in commercial premises require manifestation so that people can clearly see the glass and the installation meets the applicable Building Regulations.

Manifestation is commonly applied as bands, dots, graphics or company branding after installation. We can supply manifestation dots as a small add-on. The glass must be thoroughly cleaned before they are applied so they adhere properly. For full bands, graphics or company branding, use a specialist manifestation or signage supplier.

If you are planning a commercial project, the relevant Building Regulations, access requirements and any fire-safety implications should be checked for the particular building rather than assumed from the partition specification alone.
