What Thickness Should a Glass Partition Be?

The thickness of a glass partition depends on the height of the partition and its specific requirements, such as strength, safety, and sound insulation. The most common thicknesses for glass partitions are 10mm and 12mm toughened glass, with an option for 12.8mm acoustic laminated glass for sound reduction.

10mm Toughened Glass

10mm toughened glass is ideal for most standard glass partitions up to 2700mm in height. It provides sufficient strength for everyday use and complies with UK safety regulations for impact resistance (BS 6206 and BS EN 12150). This thickness is the most cost-effective solution and is commonly used in offices, shops, and residential spaces. However, while it is durable, it does not offer significant sound insulation.

12mm Toughened Glass

12mm toughened glass is recommended for partitions exceeding 2700mm in height, providing added strength and stability for larger installations. It is often chosen for high-traffic areas or where additional structural integrity is needed. This thicker glass also complies with UK safety standards but, like 10mm glass, offers limited sound reduction.

12.8mm Acoustic Laminated Glass

If sound insulation is a key concern, 12.8mm acoustic laminated glass is the best choice. This glass consists of two layers of glass with an acoustic laminate in between, significantly reducing sound transmission. It is ideal for meeting rooms, offices, and other spaces where noise control is a priority. While it is more expensive, the enhanced soundproofing makes it a valuable option for noise-sensitive environments.

UK Safety Regulations for Glass Partitions

All of our glass partitions, whether they are 10mm, 12mm, or 12.8mm thick, comply with UK safety regulations, including British Standard BS 6206 for impact resistance and BS EN 12150 for safety glazing in buildings. These standards ensure that the glass used is toughened or laminated for maximum safety and durability, suitable for both commercial and residential environments.

While 10mm toughened glass is generally the best choice for value and strength, consider 12mm toughened for taller installations and 12.8mm acoustic glass if sound insulation is a priority.
